🔬 The Microplastic Detect Kit is now on YouTube!
I’m excited to share the launch of a five part video tutorial series for the Microplastic Detect Kit, designed to bring hands on microplastic research into high school classrooms.

Microplastics can be incredibly difficult to see, but that doesn’t mean students can’t investigate them.

Through this flipped classroom series, educators and students can follow along with the kit to:
💧 Filter water samples and capture particles
🧪 Prepare samples for fluorescence analysis
🔬 Use Nile Red staining to make potential microplastics visible
📸 Examine particles using microscopy and imaging
🧠 Think critically about what the evidence can and cannot tell us

The goal is more than simply teaching students about plastic pollution. It’s about giving students the opportunity to think and work like scientists.

This project grew out of my research on accessible microplastic detection and my experiences working with students through environmental monitoring and science education. I’m especially excited to see these methods move beyond the research laboratory and into classrooms where students can investigate samples from their own communities.

This project was made possible through funding from the Philadelphia Regional Center for Children’s Environmental Health (PRCCEH) via Samantha McBride.

I’d love to hear from educators, researchers, and environmental organizations interested in bringing hands on microplastic science into their classrooms and communities.
